Changes to your diet and physical activity levels are the first step to helping you lose weight. A healthcare professional can help you assess your current diet and levels of physical activity, and set realistic personal goals for change.

You may also want to look into other services that could provide you with additional support to help you reach your weight management goals. Below are a number of services that may be of interest.

Your healthcare professional

If you have tried and haven't been able to lose weight or keep the weight off, your GP practice can assess your general health, help identify causes of weight gain, work out if there are any health issues that could be causing the weight gain, and discuss a plan that could help you lose weight.

The NHS website has guidance on eating a healthy, balanced diet and regular physical activity. They also offer a free weight loss plan and you can look out for a local NHS weight loss support group.

Local Pharmacies

Pharmacists are experts in medicines and are trained in providing health and wellbeing advice. They can help you with minor health concerns and most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues without being overheard. Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends, so there are plenty of opportunities to speak with them.

If you want to find a pharmacy near you, use the NHS pharmacy locator.

Online Pharmacies

Many pharmacies now offer an online service where you can undergo a virtual consultation or even speak to a healthcare professional online about your concerns. If appropriate, they can even prescribe and deliver direct to your door.
