Zašto je važno znati svoj ITM?

ITM je dobar način za provjeru rizika od bolesti povezanih s tjelesnom masnoćom. Život s prekomjernom težinom ili debljinom povezan je s povećanim rizikom od smrtnosti i drugih bolesti ili stanja. Općenito, što je vaš ITM viši, veći je rizik od razvoja drugih kroničnih bolesti povezanih s debljinom, kao što su:

  • Šećerna bolest tipa II
  • Visoka razina šećera u krvi
  • Visoka razina kolesterola
  • Visoki krvni tlak
  • Neplodnost
  • Depresija i anksioznost
  • Koronarna bolest srca poput srčanog udara
  • Dislipidemija
  • Metabolička disfunkcija povezana s steatohepatitisom (MASH) / Metabolička disfunkcija povezana s steatotskom bolešću jetre (MASLD)
  • Gastroezofagealna refluksna bolest (GERD)
  • Metabolički sindrom (MetS)
  • Urinarna inkontinencija

Koja su ograničenja ITM-a?

ITM je jednostavno i objektivno mjerilo, ali može biti zavaravajuće u određenim slučajevima i za neke skupine ljudi. Istraživanja su pokazala da je ITM manje točan u predviđanju rizika od bolesti kod starijih osoba, sportaša, onih koji su visoki ili niski i onih s više mišićne mase. Na primjer, elitni sportaši ili bodybuilderi imaju više mišića i teže više, što čini njihov ITM višim.

ITM također ne uzima u obzir:

  • Nasljedne čimbenike rizika povezane s bolestima povezanima s debljinom, poput metaboličkog sindroma
  • Ekološke i životne čimbenike osim debljine koji mogu pridonijeti vašem riziku od razvoja kroničnih bolesti
  • Kako je tjelesna masnoća raspoređena kod pojedinaca

Važno je zapamtiti da život s debljinom ne znači nužno da ste nezdravi, kao što biti u 'normalnoj' težini ne znači da ste zdravi. Vaš ITM vas ne definira, ali znanje i razumijevanje vašeg ITM-a može biti moćan alat za preuzimanje kontrole nad vlastitim zdravljem.

Kako ITM i omjer struka i visine mogu pomoći u upravljanju zdravljem srca

Ljudi koji žive s prekomjernom težinom ili debljinom imaju veći rizik od razvoja kardiovaskularnih bolesti, također poznatih kao bolesti srca.

Iako se i ITM i omjer struka i visine (WtHR) mogu koristiti za procjenu rizika osobe od razvoja kardiovaskularnih bolesti, WtHR se smatra boljim prediktorom kardiovaskularnih faktora rizika, poput visokog krvnog tlaka i visokog kolesterola.

ITM se koristi za označavanje kategorije težine osobe, na temelju njezine visine i težine. S druge strane, WtHR se koristi za mjerenje raspodjele tjelesne masnoće osobe, na temelju njezine visine i opsega struka. Mjerenje WtHR je važno jer je višak masnoće pohranjen oko trbuha posebno povezan s povećanim rizikom od razvoja bolesti srca.
